They may hassle you a little, but the best bet is to just play Galaxian a while until it freezes (there is a freezing bug).

If you get one in which the Galaxian ship is red and not white, you will want to try to put in a ticket with A1Up for a PCB with the latest firmware. Here's the other keys to buying this cab: I've honestly considered getting decals online to wrap my cab in Galaxian artwork instead of Galaga, I like it that much. And even if you didn't like Space Invaders, there's a good chance you will really like Galaxian if you just give it a few days. It's faster and more intense, so if you liked Space Invaders at all, you will like Galaxian. This game followed very close on the heels of Space Invaders and was probably the best of all the Space Invaders followers. There's also a really cool variable scoring in which you get bonus points for taking out a formation of ships, particularly if you take out the gold ship after destroying the two red wingman ships. Hit them, and you can fire immediately again, allowing you to take out a swarm of dive bombers as you fly through the missiles (if you are a good shot). As you dodge missiles and swoop towards them, the distance closes dramatically, and you get just one shot to dead-eye the enemy. You will find yourself dodging swarms of shots which is immensely satisfying, while at the same time flying TOWARDS enemies trying to Kamikaze you (because if you try to get away they will often hit you from the side with their horizontal swoops). As you get good at the game, the dogfights in Galaxian become truly epic. This also fly at you in formations and are less predictable in general than Galaga. One of the key differences between this and Galaga is that lots of ships will dive bomb you simultaneously and fire an absolute hail of bullets, WAY more than what you will have shot at you in Galaga. Once you have played it for a while and gotten good (able to make it to probably the third screen), this game absolutely shines. It seems very hard at first (only one shot at a time), and maybe not that fun initially. Here's the thing you have to know about the game. In fact, Galaxian outsold Pac-Man in the Japanese arcades back in the day it was that good. I put up a post on here a while back asking if anyone else found themselves liking Galaxian the most after having gotten this cabinet, and I was not the only one. This is absolutely a solid two game cabinet.Īnd I found out later I'm not alone. Galaxian is fantastic, and may actually be the better of the two games on the cabinet. I got the Galaga cab having never played Galaxian, and thinking I was just getting it for the one game. Have you actually ever played Galaxian? Not just once or twice, but actually played it quite a bit over the period of a few days?

I've been thinking about pulling the trigger on a Galaga cabinet, even if $199 is kind of steep for what's essentially one game. (And it sounds like Arcade 1UP even drags their feet on paid orders.) I'm not opposed to simply ordering a deck protector and/or newer control deck with the latest PCB, but, again, I'd rather avoid any additional hassles if at all possible.

My question is how can one tell what version of a cabinet you're buying? Or can you? Is there any type of visible serial number or packaging differences between revisions? Or is it pretty much luck of the draw? Is spending $299 on the cab + riser combo the only way to guarantee a non-Gen 1 device?

And knowing what a pain in the ass it will be to either try and return the unit or deal with Arcade 1UP's allegedly nonexistent customer service, I'd like to potentially mitigate any troubles by simply buying the most up-to-date version of the cab available. However, I've read a few too many horror stories about the Gen 1 cabs. I'd definitely get a lot of enjoyment out of it. Pac Man, and since the latter doesn't appear to be happening anytime soon, I figure may as well. (I mean, seriously, who plays Galaxian?) That said, Galaga is my favorite score chaser after Ms. So I bought a Final Fight cab towards the end of December when they dropped in price to $199 and have been mostly happy with it so far.
